訃報記者へ舞い込んだ依頼は、＜最低＞な老婦人の＜最高＞なおくやみ欄を生前に作ること。年齢もキャリアも全て違う2人がもたらす人生の綴り方。嫌われ老婦人からの最後の依頼は、予想外の”幸せなおくりもの”となっていく････
近年、終活への意識がますます高まるなか、誰もが人生を見つめ直したくなる感動作が新たに誕生した。すべてを意のままにコントロールし、裕福な老後生活を送る女性が自分の訃報記事を書かせようと思い立つことから物語は始まる。自分勝手ながらも周りを巻き込むパワーを持つ主人公ハリエットを演じたのは、60年以上にわたってハリウッドを支え続け、いまなお輝きを放つ大女優シャーリー・マックレーン。そして記事を書くために雇われた若い新聞記者のアンには、若手女優の中でも同世代の女性たちから絶大な人気を誇るアマンダ・セイフライドが指名された。
今回、シャーリーとアマンダはプロデューサーも務めており、このテーマに対する関心の高さも伺わせるが、世界的に高齢化が進むなか、実際にアメリカでも自身の訃報記事を自分で書きたがる人が増えているという。本作では人生の終わり方を考える現代の風潮を見事に捉えつつ、一方で始まったばかりのキャリアに悩みを抱える若い女性の姿も丁寧に描いている。すでに幅広い層から共感を得ている珠玉のハートフルストーリーは、いくつになっても人生は綴り直すことができるのだという勇気と希望を与えてくれるはずだ。
あらすじ
ビジネスの成功で財をなした老婦人のハリエット・ローラーは何不自由なく暮らしていたが、80代に入ってから孤独と死への不安を感じていた。そこで、ハリエットは自身の訃報記事を生前に執筆することを思いつき、地元の若い新聞記者であるアン・シャーマンに依頼する。しかし、自己中心的なハリエットのことを良く言う人はおらず、理想とかけ離れた原稿を読んだ彼女は、"最高の訃報記事”に欠かせない４つの条件を満たすため、自分を変えることを決意。その要素とは、家族や友人に愛されること、同僚から尊敬されること、誰かの人生に影響を与えるような人物であること、そして記事の見出しになるような人の記憶に残る特別な何かをやり遂げることだった。何事にも強気なハリエットと一歩を踏み出す勇気のないアン。正反対の2人はぶつかってばかりいたが、いつしか世代を超えた友情が芽生え始めていた。そんなハリエットとの出会いが人知れず悩みを抱えていたアンの未来をも変えていくことに････。
