『マイ・レフトフット』(89) や『父の祈りを』(93) で知られる巨匠ジム・シェリダンが、アイルランドの人気作家セバスチャン・バリーがコスタ賞（英国で権威のある文学賞）を受賞した同名小説を映画化。

物語はアイルランドを舞台に、40年にわたり病院に収容されているある老女の知られざる過去が、1人の医師と１冊の聖書によって明らかにされていくところからはじまる。1940年代第二次世界大戦時、激動の時代に翻弄されながらも、たった一つの愛を貫いた女性の生き様と長きにわたり封印されてきた衝撃の真実が、現在と過去の時間軸を行き来しながら壮大なスケールで描かれるミステリアスな大河ロマンとなっている。

主人公ローズはなぜ長い間病院で過ごしてきたのか、なぜ聖書に秘かに日記を書き綴っていたのか、一体彼女にはどんな過去があるのか……半世紀のときをこえて徐々に紐解かれる記録は、我々に思いがけない驚きと胸を震わす感動をもたらしてくれる。

あらすじ

取り壊しが決まった聖マラキ病院。

転院する患者たちの再診のために病院を訪れた精神科医スティーヴン・グリーン（エリック・バナ）は、病院で40年間もの長い時間を過ごしてきたローズ・F・クリア（ヴァネッサ・レッドグレイヴ）を看ることになる。彼女は自分の赤ん坊を殺した罪を背負っていた。しかしローズは、その罪を否認し続け、自身を本名とは別の「ローズ・マクナルティ」と名乗り続けていた。

グリーン医師は、ローズが大切にしている1冊の聖書の存在を知り、彼女の過去に興味を持ちはじめる。ローズは何十年にもわたって、聖書のなかに秘かに日記を書き綴っていたのだ。そして彼女は日記を辿りながら半世紀前の記憶を遡り、グリーン医師を前に自分の人生を語り始める････
