HOW TO BUY TICKETS

Maguy Marin, a France-based choreographer who has continued to raise issues through numerous works dealing with social themes since the late 1970s, will be performing in Japan since 9 years.

This production of “May B” was first staged in 1981. It was inspired by the absurdist plays of Samuel Beckett, the playwright and novelist who revolutionized the postwar European theater scene. This work ironically depicts the desires, emotions, and loneliness of people who cling to life with old, tired, and unfettered bodies covered with white mud, and it defied the Western dance conventions of the time that “young, beautiful bodies dance,” presenting new dance possibilities and shocking the dance and theater worlds.

Marin focused on the physicality of Beckett’s works and expressed in the form of dance theater the energy of people resisting aging and the death that awaits them, something that dance had not ventured into until then. As Gavin Bryars’ “Jesus’ Blood Never Failed Me Yet” loops in the background, the old people wandering around with no destination in sight, facing a life cut off from hope, is something that can be seen in our current society and times of widening inequality.

More than 40 years after its premiere, “May B” continues to be performed around the world without losing its color. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to see Maguy Marin’s masterpiece, which will surely leave its mark on dance history.
