“We are living in a reality choreographed by narratives”
-Toshiki Okada (From the Performance “Bodies Exploring Tomorrow”)
In March 2021, “I Am a Battlefield of Narratives” was presented as a Work-in-Progress at the Saitama Dance Laboratory Vol. 3 performance “Bodies Exploring Tomorrow,” a project for the development and creation of the Saitama Arts Theater.
Toshiki Okada is a playwright and novelist who has continued to renew the traditional relationship between text (words) and the body, cutting into contemporary social issues from a critical perspective. With Okada in charge of text and direction, dancer/choreographer Ema Yuasa incorporated them into her body and expressed with words, and danced in Work-in-Progress, where the first part of the entire work was performed.
In addition to the first part, which discourses flew around Yuasa’s body as a field, triggered by a claims that developed on SNS, the second and third parts will be performed this fall in a completed version that Okada has newly written. Shingo Ota, who also has a unique presence as an actor in Okada’s works, will join them on stage. A new form of “dance” triggered by words. Please look forward to it.
【For the performance of this work】
“Various narratives – stories that help define how people think – abound in the world, battling to gain as much support as possible. And the place where the battle unfolds, in other words, the battlefield, is none other than ourselves. The dancer Ema Yuasa will create a dance piece – in which her body is considered as a battle field – a place where she is tossed around by various circumstances. The other performer, actor Shingo Ota, will appear in the production as a tosser and a stirrer of situations.
The body is a battlefield of narratives. Of course, this does not only happen to dancers. It happens to all of us frequently and fiercely in our daily lives. This dance piece is also a way to make clear the obvious fact that dance has something to do with our daily lives, even if we are not dancers.”
