HOW TO BUY TICKETS

“Etoile” means “star” in French, and is also named after the head of the Paris Opera, the world’s most prestigious opera house. Worthy of its name, the “Piano Etoile Series” is an exciting program of performances by the theater’s selected up-and-coming pianists, who stand out among the brilliant lineup of young pianists.

For Vol. 45, we are pleased to welcome the talented Kanon Matsuda, whose passionate pianism makes your soul tremble. At the age of 6, she went to Moscow to study for many years, and in 2014 made her CD debut on the prestigious Deutsche Grammophon label. She has performed with many famous conductors and orchestras.

This program is a nod to her musical roots. The first half of the concert will feature Scriabin on the 150th anniversary of his birth, as well as small pieces by Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninoff. The second half will be Tchaikovsky’s “Grand Sonata”. She says, “I would like to perform with all my heart so that everyone can feel the various charms of Russian music.” Please look forward to a selection of her works.

Comment from Kanon Matsuda!

This program is composed of works by Russian composers from my childhood.
I have included Tchaikovsky’s works in both the first and second half, but even within the same Tchaikovsky, the 18 Pieces and the Grand Sonata are completely different works, and I hope you enjoy the various faces of Russian music.
As this year marks the 150th anniversary of Scriabin’s birth, I have chosen his works. We will also perform a work by Rachmaninoff, a classmate of Scriabin’s from the Moscow Conservatory, and I hope you will feel that there are completely different ways of expression even in the same period.
Also, Tchaikovsky’s Grand Sonata, which will be featured in the second half of the program, has a melody in the fourth movement that I really like. The melody is full of hope and looks forward to a bright future, and is also refreshing, as if a gentle spring breeze had blown. If you listen to it, you will immediately know “This is it! I think you can enjoy this sonata by waiting for the melody to appear. I would like to perform with all my heart so that everyone can feel the various charms of Russian music.
