Since its start in 1998, under the direction of artistic director Yukio Ninagawa, the Sainokuni Shakespeare Series aims to present performances of all 37 plays of Shakespeare, which has released a series of popular works in Japan and abroad. Actor Kotaro Yoshida was appointed as the series’ second artistic director in October 2016, and the series resumed the following December with “Timon of Athens”. The production of “Henry VIII” in February last year received high evaluation for his directing skills, which gave further impetus to this series.
However, the spread of the new coronavirus infection that has become a worldwide pandemic, the last four performances in Saitama were cancelled, and this also affected the 36th series “King John” that was scheduled to be performed in June, forcing the cancellation of all performances.
In an unprecedented situation that still persists, the series is now entering its 37th and final production, “All’s Well that Ends Well”.
The story centers on Helen, an orphan from a different background who falls in love with the young Earl Bertram, and the fascinating characters that are essential to Shakespeare’s comedies. In this performance, Bertram runs in all directions, and Helen’s single minded love affair will keep you glued to this play until the end. It will be presented by Kotaro Yoshida, who has a deep knowledge of Shakespeare’s works, and a splendid cast that will present the finale.
“All’s well that ends well”, don’t miss that moment of the grand finale!
Summary
The story takes place in France. Bertram, the young Count of Roussillon, and his vassals, the Parolles, are on their way to Paris to visit the King of France, who is on his sickbed. Helen, a beautiful orphan under the protection of Bertram’s mother, the Countess of Roussillon, has feelings for Bertram, but is unable to confide in him due to their different status.
Helen cures the dying king with a secret prescription she inherited from a brilliant doctor her father, and in return she is given the right to choose her husband. Helen chooses Bertram, but Bertram refuses to marry the daughter of a poor doctor, but the king reprimands him and he reluctantly agrees. Bertram, who has no choice but to marry Helen has no intention of spending his wedding night with her, declares in a letter that “He will not become a husband and wife unless she gets the ring he is wearing and conceives a child of his own”, and goes to the battle of Florence, Italy.
Helen followed him to Florence on the pretext of a pilgrimage. There she takes refuge in the home of Capillet’s widow, where she learns Bertram’s great exploits in the region and of Bertram’s courtship of the widow’s daughter Diana. In order to become his true wife, Helen enlists the help of Diana and Capillet’s widow to put a plan into action…
