Thunderous beats and surging waves of dance! At the end of this frenzy and intoxication lies a dream—or is it…?
Based in the UK, choreographer Hofesh Shechter continues to lead the forefront of the global scene, working across dance, music, and film. His acclaimed work “Theatre of Dreams” makes its Japan premiere.
Human emotions—fear, desire, hope—are laid bear with striking intensity and thrill through the dancers’ overwhelming physicality and music composed by Shechter himself, performed live by a band. As the boundary between dream and reality dissolves, the audience is drawn ever deeper into this “theatre of dreams.”

‘The dance dazzles, defined by razor-sharp gestures, a contagious energy and the irresistible beauty which characterizes Shechter’s work.’ —Le Figaro

It had been seven years since I last stepped into Hofesh’s world in “Political Mother: The Choreographer’s Cut” in 2019. This new work is filled with a striking contrast between moments of delicate stillness and bursts of incredible energy in motion. The meticulously crafted set and lighting constantly spark your imagination, making you wonder what is happening just beyond your sight. Hofesh’s music-craetion—one of the things I love most about his work—is as powerful as ever.
Even without any prior knowledge, anyone can immerse themselves in the dancers’ extraordinary skill and the overwhelming power of the music.
There was one particular scene that brought the audience in Shanghai to its feet, and I’m excited to see how Japanese audiences will respond to it.

Choreographer and composer, Hofesh Shechter, OBE is recognized as one of the most exciting UK artists making stage work today. After dancing with Batsheva Dance Company, he moved to Paris to study music before relocating to London in 2002. “In your rooms” (2007), created in co-production with London’s leading dance institutions—The Place, Southbank Centre, and Sadler’s Wells—was met with a full house and won the Critics’ Circle National Dance Award for Best Choreography, propelling him into the spotlight. In 2008, he founded Hofesh Shechter Company. His first works presented in Japan, “Political Mother” (2010) and “Political Mother: The Choreographer’s Cut”(2019), generated significant acclaim. Alongside his prolific work with his own company, he has created pieces for some of the world’s most renowned companies, including Nederlands Dans Theater 1, the Paris Opera Ballet, and The Royal Ballet. His activities span a wide range of fields, including musicals, opera, theatre, film, and television; the Broadway musical “Fiddler on the Roof” (2016) received a Tony Award nomination. He also appeared as himself in the film “En Corps” (released in 2023), which drew considerable attention. He serves as Co-director of the L’Agora – Cité internationale de la Danse, Montpellier, and Associate Artist of Sadler’s Wells. He was awarded a Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres in 2026. |
