A farewell song to those who she loved――
A piece by Pina Bausch from the last years of her life to be danced on by her beloved dancers.
Pina Bausch, the choreographer who changed dance and theater in the 20th century with her groundbreaking works called “Tanztheater”, in which dance and theater merge so originally, is coming to Japan for the first time in eight years since her “NELKEN” in 2017. Tanztheater Wuppertal will present this time the first performance in Japan of “Sweet Mambo”, a piece which Pina Bausch created in the last years of her life, before her sudden death in 2009.
Joy, craving, temptation, disappointment, sadness, and tenderness. The dancers from the premiere of this piece, who had spent many years together with Pina, having gained in age and experience, will gather on stage once again.
World premiere: 30 May 2008, Schauspielhaus Wuppertal (Wuppertal, Germany)
Restaging: 26 May 2022, Opernhaus Wuppertal (Wuppertal, Germany)

Profile | Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch Born in Germany in 1940, Pina Bausch studied dance with Kurt Jooss at the Folkwang School of the Arts, was invited to join the Wuppertal Ballet as a choreographer in 1971, of which she became artistic director in 1973, and renamed the Tanztheater Wuppertal. Tanztheater Wuppertal has had an enormous impact on the world of performing arts by producing a succession of innovative and groundbreaking works that transcend conventional notions of dance and theater, and by producing numerous international co-productions with a number of countries and cities. Her representative works include “The Rite of Spring”, “Café Müller”, “Kontakthof”, “NELKEN”, and others. In 2009, Pina Bausch’s life journey reached its end.
After the death of Pina Bausch, the Tanztheater Wuppertal has continued its energetic activities, creating and performing not only Pina Bausch’s works but also new works by other choreographers. Since 1986, the Tanztheater Wuppertal has frequently toured to Japan, making its first appearance at Saitama Arts Theater in 1996 with “The Piece with the Ship”. In 2004, the theater co-produced “Ten Chi”, and has also presented many other Pina Bausch works. This will be the Tanztheater’s seventh appearance in Saitama. |
