Akram Khan’s Reimagines Kipling’s Classic
A Story of Love and Awe for Nature and Animals
As climate change causes the oceans to dominate the land, people are leaving their homelands one after another in order to survive. By forming an uneasy alliance, animals stake out their territory in a desolate city. One human child finds herself there, separated from her family. What does the girl, later named Mowgli, living with the animals, see in the jungle-turned-world, and what decisions will she make?
Based on “The Jungle Book” by Joseph Rudyard Kipling, much-loved classic around the world, world-renowned choreographer Akram Khan, who once played the main character Mowgli at the age of 10 (in The Adventures of Mowgli directed by Peter Brook), confronts the story once again and adapts it for the stage in his own interpretation. Invited by the rich dance spun from words, the animation that brings the stage to life, and the eloquent music, people, humans, animals and nature – everything that lives together on this planet start to raise their voices. Living in uncertain times, what can we do now to pass the baton to the future? The story Akram Khan tells is our own story.
