The Sainokuni Shakespeare Series 2nd began in May 2024 under the artistic direction of Kotaro Yoshida. The second production, Macbeth, is scheduled for May 2025. Following the critically acclaimed first installment, Hamlet, which showcased “the beauty of Shakespearean language,” this new production tackles one of Shakespeare’s four great tragedies, with its high popularity and dramatic depth.
Taking on the title role of Macbeth is Tatsuya Fujiwara, who has been captivated by the power of Shakespearean words since his teenage years. His performance in Macbeth, a play that has influenced countless artistic works, is highly anticipated. Playing Lady Macbeth, embarking on her first Shakespearean role, is Tao Tsuchiya, drawing attention for how she will interpret this infamous “wicked woman.”
The production also stars:
• Yamato Kawachi as Banquo, Macbeth’s friend
• Yusuke Hirose as Macduff, a Scottish nobleman driven by revenge after losing his wife and children
• Yuki Inoue as Malcolm, Duncan’s son and eventual king
• Takao Taka as King Duncan of Scotland
Kotaro Yoshida, in addition to directing and adapting the script, will also appear as one of the three witches.
As an actor with extensive experience in Shakespearean roles, Yoshida brings a vision of making these works accessible to everyone. With a talented cast and a commitment to highlighting Shakespeare’s timeless human themes, the second installment of the new series promises to deliver an electrifying production of Macbeth.

Macbeth (Tatsuya Fujiwara) and Banquo (Yamato Kawachi) encounter three witches (Kotaro Yoshida and others) in a desolate wilderness. The witches prophecy that Macbeth will become Thane of Cawdor and eventually King of Scotland, while Banquo’s descendants will inherit the throne. Upon learning of the prophecy through a letter, Lady Macbeth (Tao Tsuchiya) resolves to help Macbeth fulfill his destiny. Macbeth assassinates King Duncan (Takao Taka) and seizes the throne but is soon tormented by guilt.
Driven by paranoia and the witches’ ominous predictions, Macbeth commits increasingly heinous acts, while Lady Macbeth, once strong-willed, succumbs to guilt and hallucinations, spiraling into madness. Meanwhile, Macduff (Yusuke Hirose) and Malcolm (Yuki Inoue) gather forces to confront Macbeth, as the witches’ wild prophecies begin to come true.
